17 Secret iPhone Interrogation Codes

Do note that ‘pin’ means that you should use your SIM card pin number. Don’t mistake it with your iPhone’s passcode. If you consider these codes helpful please share!

1. IMEI Number | Code: *#06#
The International Mobile Equipment Identity number is a 15-digit code that uniquely identifies your iPhone within GSM, UTMS and all other mobile phone networks. It’s always printed on your iPhone’s original delivery box and is required in the unfortunate case that your iOS device is lost or stolen. IMEI is required when filling a complaint to the police and when addressing the insurance company. This identification number can be also found in Settings -> General -> About.

2. Field Test | Code: *3001#12345#* + ‘Call’
By accessing the hidden iPhone field test mode you’re able to find out live updated information about your cell phone network. You can uncover the numerical value of your cell phone signal and read data about surrounding cell towers. If you tap on the numerical valued carrier signal, available in the top left corner of your screen, you can switch between graphic and numerical display. Numerical values are always negative. Figures around ‘-50’ are for optimal reception while those towards ‘-120’ are considered very poor.

3. Call Barring | Status: *#33# | Turn ON: *33*pin# | Turn OFF: #33*pin#
These secret codes help you to check the restriction status of all your outgoing calls, data usage, texts and so on. Call barring is used to protect yourself from accidental calls when you allow your child to play with your iPhone, for example. iOS currently doesn’t offer a menu Setting for blocking outgoing calls. You could partially solve the problem by turning on Airplane Mode. However, this can be turned back off easily by anyone. Instead use the above codes to block or unblock all outgoing calls. Replace ‘pin’ with your SIM card pin, NOT iPhone Passcode!

4. Call Waiting | Status: *#43# | Enable: *43# | Disable: #43#
This short code interrogates your device if Call Waiting is enabled or not. This setting allows you to be able to receive other calls while you’re already engaged in a conversation. The second and other callers will be cued in the waiting line. You’re notified with a sound alert when another call is waiting for you and have the option to decide if you wish to maintain the actual conversation, decline the new one or keep one of them on hold until you finish the other. Within iOS, call waiting is available in Settings -> Phone -> Call Waiting.

5. Call Forwarding | Status – All: *#21# – Unreachable: *#62# – When Busy: *#67# | Disable All Forwarding: ##002# + ‘Call’
Whenever you’re busy or on holiday you can redirect your calls to another colleague or family member. Use the nearby mentioned secret code and interrogate your iPhone about its current call forwarding settings. Besides voice data, you can also check out forwarding for data and faxes. Redirecting voice calls can be also set up from the iOS Settings -> Phone -> Call Forwarding. Use the other codes to check call forwarding status, when phone is out of reach or when busy.

6. Outgoing Call Anonymity | Status: *#31# + | Current Call: #31#phone-number + ‘Call’
When initiating and outgoing call you have the option to make your phone number available for the receiving caller or to hide it. Anonymity status can be checked with the first of the first code provided above. To initiate an anonymous call you can either edit your contact or directly use your iPhone keypad to add the #31# code in front of the dialed phone number. Else, if you wish to hide your number in all outgoing calls, visit the iOS Settings -> Phone -> Show My Caller ID menu.

8. SMS Message Center Number | Check: *#5005*7672# + ‘Call’: get your carrier’s text message center number.

9. EFR Mode | Code: *3370# + ‘Call’: Enhanced Full Rate is a speech codding standard that improves voice quality for GSM conversations. It also burns a little more battery life. (not available on all networks.)

4. iTunes Match

A more immediately exciting use of Apple’s cloud services is seen in iTunes Match. This is a service that you pay £21.99 a year for, and it lets you stream your entire music collection from the cloud to your phone, freeing-up any internal storage you might otherwise have had to expend on music. You have to “sync” your music library with iTunes Match, and can have up to 25,000 songs.

5. What is iCloud and how to use it

iCloud is Apple’s own cloud storage service. It doesn’t get all that much attention, but it’s a massively important part of the Apple infrastructure. By default, it’s used to back-up most of the data on your phone, including photos, contacts, emails and calendar entries. Apple gives you 5GB of storage for free, and should you need more you can pay a little extra for more. You’ll find iCloud info and storage options in Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.

6. There are accessories to expand your storage

iPhones do not let you plug in memory cards to increase the phone’s storage. It’s not something Apple has ever allowed. However, there are Wi-Fi-based solutions that can give you more room to play with fairly effectively. The last we looked at was the Kingston WiDrive. Devices like these are Wi-Fi transmitters that connect directly to the iPhone, through the medium of an app. They either have their own internal storage or offer a card slot. Files on these data drives can then be imported using the iPhone.

7. You can Tweet through Siri

As well as grabbing you information from the web, Siri can write tweets for you. However, we strongly recommend checking what she’s made of your words before posting, especially if you have an accent that she might stumble over.

8. Location-based reminders

Siri is the iPhone 5’s voice assistant. She takes an audio file of what you say over to Apple’s servers, which then decipher it and do their best to help with whatever you’re after. You can ask Siri to make Location-based reminders, which will pipe up when the iPhone 5’s GPS tracker has calculated that you’re in a certain place. To turn on Siri, check out the Siri sub-menu in Settings > General. To access Siri once enabled, you just need to hold down on the Home button.

9. How to transcode videos to iPhone format

If you want to watch downloaded videos using the native video player, you’ll most likely have to start transcoding files. Bits of software that can do this include Handbrake and Visual Hub. However, transcoding is a laborious process, so we recommend downloading a decent third-party video player if you have a big library of downloaded videos.

3. Turn on HDR

For casual photographers, there’s little reason not to use the HDR mode of the iPhone 5’s camera app. HDR stands for high dynamic range, and is a mode that melds two different exposures in a single photo to create the most detail-filled shot possible. The iPhone 5 automatically captures a non-HDR shot with each HDR one too. What’s the downside? HDR mode is significantly slower than standard shooting, to make time for the processing of the HDR shot.

2. Use the volume key as a shutter button

Apple lets you use the iPhone 5’s “volume up” button to take photos, as well as the touchscreen. This button is in a near-perfect position to take on the role as a shutter button. This even works when using a three-button remote control, including Bluetooth headsets. So you can effectively use a wireless headset as a remote shutter control. How cool is that?

1. Get a quick look at the photo you just took

For the first good old while using an iPhone 5, we always used to tap the Gallery shortcut at the bottom of the camera app’s screen to look at photos. However, it turns out this is completely unnecessary. Just swipe left-to-right from the camera preview screen and you’ll instantly be taken to the camera roll, which shows you your photos, starting with the most recently-taken one.

When your iPhone battery is running low, turning off the following settings can help make your iPhone last longer. With these off, you can still receive calls, SMS and even go online with EDGE connection.

1. Settings > Wi-Fi > Off.
2. Settings > Bluetooth > Off.
3. Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Off.
4. Settings > General > Cellular > Enable 3G > Off.
5. Settings > General > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off.
6. Settings > Sounds > Vibrate on Ring & Silent > Off.
7. Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper > Auto-Brightness > Off.

2. Stop The Music With A Timer

Do you like to listen to music when getting into bed for the night but often doze off without switching the iPhone off? You can use a timer to help you shut down the music. To do this, tap on Clock > Timer > When Timer Ends. Scroll down and tap Stop Playing. Then, set a timer (say 30 mins) and tap Start. Now you may play any music and it will be turned off after 30 mins.

3. Delete Last Digit in Calculator App

Entered a wrong digit in the Calculator app? Instead of tapping the Clear [C] button, you can just swipe your finger to the left or right of the numbers to clear the last digit. Each swipe will remove the last digit until the number becomes zero.

4. Set An Alphanumeric Passcode

Add an extra layer of protection to your iPhone with an alphanumeric passcode. To activate it, go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Turn off Simple Passcode and you will be prompted to enter your alphanumeric password.
